Astrodatabank reports an AA-rated birth time with Ascendant of 25LI55. The proposed rectification is slightly earlier with an Ascendant of 20LI12.

Stage I. Determine the Ascendant sign

For horoscopes with AA-rated birth data, the objective of Stage I rectification is to confirm the Ascendant sign.

Configuration of the Chart

Libra rising with ruler Venus in the 12th ruling the 8th is consistent with Crane’s interest in prostitutes and brothels as well as his contraction of tuberculosis which resulted in his death. His willingness to testify in favor of a prostitute after a police arrest was scandalous and considered a mark against his social reputation. This is also consistent with the placement of Venus in the 12th.

Physiognomy

The third decan of Libra is Gemini with lord Mercury combust in Scorpio. Crane’s countenance is consistent with the ruler of the rising decan placed in Scorpio – note the contrast between the dark eyebrows and the forehead as well as the darkness of the eyes. Overall shape of the face appears consistent with the compressed ovate shape of Libra but some additional photos are required to confirm.

Stage II. Determine the Ascendant’s range within 1-4 degrees

For death of mother on 7-Dec-1891, see dsa Saturn 25CP50 and dsa Moon 13CA56. Saturn rules the 5th or death of the mother and is directed to the Lot of the Mother. Moon is the universal significator of the mother and is directed to the Lot of Death of the Mother. Both of these measurements are less than 1 degree. While computing this rectification, both of these measurements suggested the rectified time was slightly earlier than the AA-rated birth time. Note the later AA-rated time would be almost a perfect match for the dsa Saturn = IC. As I continue to stress in my approach to rectification, not all life affairs are timed by dynamic activity to the angles. In this case, if my rectification is correct, death of the mother is timed by the appropriate significators directed to the specific lots related to the event at hand, not to the MC-IC axis.

This set of directions timed writing and publication of Crane’s first novel Maggie (writing as of late Oct-1892, self-published Feb-1893 (see also Venus-ASC solar arc for publication of Maggie); Crane also started to write A Red Badge of Courage in June 1893 and finished it April 1894.

The latter direction timed Crane’s highly publicized involvement with a prostitute. Crane’s reputation suffered from this event. See the similar direction by solar arc which timed Crane’s publication of Maggie whose leading character was a prostitute.

REG (D Mercury/Virgo) P opposition Lot of Fortune c. => Venus (l=VE) 7-Sep-1899

The significator of tuberculosis causing death is Venus/Virgo/12th ruling the 8th. With every possible permutation of Venus opposed Lot of Fortune (direct and converse motion, with and without latitude, Ptolemy’s and Regiomontanus’ method), there are ten possible directions ranging from 28-Jan-1897 to 11-Jun-1901. With reports of Crane suffering tuberculosis as early as February 1898, it is likely he contracted the disease no later than early 1897 if this set of directions is correct.
